The Bride & Groom

A short story about how we met (Zdravko’s Version)

As young people in a digital era, we swiped right! I was intrigued by this good looking Floridian girl who had landed in a small bayside town in Spain, so far away from home.

We saw each other for the first time at the end of a bayfront park overlooking the sea. She was strikingly beautiful. We both tried our best Spanish and English on our way to get a drink, which helped gaining confidence for the rest of the date. Class president, travelled the world volunteering in medicine, competed in rowing, half Cuban and Canadian! I was so amazed by her life story and felt lucky to be there listening to her. I knew I was giving her a hard time understanding how a Bulgarian boy raised in northern Spain had a passion for British culture and its language. Soon after we ended up in an outdoor auditorium reciting iconic tales and soliloquies to each other, which we both found really funny and memorable as it didn’t feel awkward at all. Deep down I felt it was the start of something special, with cultural and language barriers, but unique in its own way.

WHAT! No that's not what it was

A short story about how we met (Anna’s Version)

After a series of events and a hard change of plans I decided to pack up all of my belongings (3 suitcases worth) and move to Spain with the intention of doing everything that had ever scared me. I would make friends, I would learn to cook, I would live by myself, I would become a teacher, I would learn Spanish (a little), and maybe I would even go on an occasional date or two just to really drive home the fear factor.

Three weeks into arriving in Spain I downloaded Tinder and scheduled a few coffee dates, Zdravko was the first, and I thought it was good I had a few more after him because for the first 30 minutes I was convinced the date was a bust (bad). We were both awkward and it was hard to hear over the noise in the cafe, I was thinking ‘this guy is so uninterested in me and hates speaking English’ but at a certain point we decided to go for a walk. I will mention that standing in a park listening to a beautiful man with a fancy accent recite Shakespeare is 1. Everything an American dating abroad can dream of. 2. Somehow the least cringy thing I have ever seen a man do (on either continent). That night when I got home I called my mom and based on HER reaction to MY reaction, we both knew this was it. Every moment since then has been confirmation that my whole life has been leading me to Santander so the universe could give me Zdravko.
